Mequon is located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin situated next to River Hills and Bayside. Mequon is part of a fast growing community made up of farmland and the most exclusive subdivisions in Milwaukee’s metro area.  The community itself is very large.  It spreads from the bluffs of beautiful Lake Michigan to Washington County.  Mequon real estate also encircles the Village of Thiensville.Mequon

History of Mequon
The name “Mequon” is believed to come from the native word “Miguan”, but with a french twist.  The Indian tribes of the Menominee and Potawatomi Indians were the first original inhabitants of the area.  European explorers and traders once used the Milwaukee River, which runs through the middle of Mequon, as their means of transportation.

The land was surveyed by Brink and Follett between 1834 and 1836.  Soon, English and New York settlers came to the area.  Not far behind them came Irish and German immigrants.

In 1840, the first Lutheran church was built in Wisconsin by Saxony settlers.
Right in the middle of Mequon is the Village of Thiensville, which is one square mile in size and was created by the wealthy immigrant, John Henry Thien.  He and his family made a dam and grist mill on the Milwaukee River.  The town of Mequon became the City of Mequon when it was incorporated in 1957.

Mequon’s Climate
Like most other Midwestern cities, Mequon experiences four distinct seasons.  The area by Lake Michigan is moderate and sees cooler temperatures in the summer and spring  and slightly warmer temperatures in the winter and fall.  The warmest month is July, when it reaches highs of 78° and lows of 58°.  January is the coldest month, with highs of 26° and lows of 11°.  The area sees most of its precipitation in the form of snowfall, with an average 47″ annually.

Education in Mequon
Mequon schools are served by the Mequon-Thiensville School District.  The district has been consistently ranked among the best schools in the state, with student test scores above state average.  The student-teacher ratio is 16 to 1.  There are three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school operating on Mequon.

The district is active with the community, parents, students, school board and staff to help create the best motivated educational environment available.  By doing this, it creates life long learners that will successfully meet future opportunities.  The district provides a challenging curriculum designed to meet the needs of each student, offers a variety of co-curricular opportunities to chance each students educational experience and provides a safe and friendly learning environment.

There are also private schools in Mequon for anyone looking for an alternative to public schooling.  There are also colleges and universities in the area, such as Milwaukee Area Technical College, Concordia University, Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and the University School of Milwaukee.

Things to See and Do in Mequon
The City of Mequon has many things to offer its residents.  There are three country clubs with great golf courses that offer a challenge for every skill level.  There are several parks that offer many amenities such as walking trails, ball fields, ball courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, community centers, senior centers and much more.

The community has recently renovated its public pool so it is now heated for year round fun.  The library was also renovated and expanded.  Residents of Mequon enjoy summer reading programs with their kids.  Residents and visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, mountain hiking, biking, snowmobiling and horseback riding.
There are great restaurants to enjoy and many areas for a great day of shopping as well.  Mequon is a wonderful place to settle down and enjoy life.
