History of Grafton
One of the most historical settlements in Grafton was Ulao, Wisconsin, which was located on the east end of what is now known as State Highway 60.  The town was founded by James Grifford in 1847.  After settling in Grafton, Grifford soon began selling cords of wood and steamships.  He then built a 1000 foot wooden pier for ships to dock in Lake Michigan.  He also built a chute that would lay down the side of a steep bluff for log transportation.

Grifford built a plank road after he was granted a charter by the territorial legislature.  The road was only three miles long but it was the start of today’s Highway 60, which led to more development in Grafton.
